At the crossroads
of Jazz, Blues and Funk

Samples from "Goodbye Blue Monday," The Mark Craddock Trio featuring Ken Saydak (Snailworx, 2009)

Let's get one thing straight from the start: There is nothing "smooth" or "new age" about the Mark Craddock Trio. Just three roadhouse veterans playing jazz on their terms -- rooted in tradition but steeped in blues, R&B and funk.

With only an acoustic bass, drums and sax, the trio delivers a stripped-down no-nonsense sound reminiscent of the small jazz combos of the 1950s and '60s. On the trio's debut album, Chicago piano monster Ken Saydak thickened the stew with some incredible Hammond B3 tracks a la Jimmy Smith.

The group's original compositions run the gamut of styles and influences, augmented by fresh arrangements of many jazz standards. The Mark Craddock Trio delivers a sound that simultaneously looks both backward and forward; paying homage to the jazz greats while putting their own stamp on the music.
